FMP Greenlit Idea – Sci-Fi Docking Station

In an interesting turn of events it appears that the Heather and Mike want me to work on this idea. I honestly thought this would be shot-down straight away due to the fairly generic sci-fi premise the idea was based on but it appears this was more appealing and more potential than the other ideas. Of course they allowed me to go ahead with this idea on one condition: do it without the giant 18m blocky statue.

The idea was made based on my interest in the Gundam franchise. Mobile Suit Gundam (機動戦士ガンダム Kidō Senshi Gandamu) is a 70s Japanese televised cartoon series set in a fictional universe where a great galactic war takes place and the soldiers pilot large bipedal robots. While it wasn’t the first cartoon to use the idea of piloting robots it certainly made a huge impact at the time and ever since many other Gundam series have been born. Like most cartoons the popularity of a show resulted the production of toys and merchandise and in the case of Gundam the big money-maker was the model kits based on the giant robots.

As a collector and builder of these model kits you could say I’m part of a community of fans who also enjoy building Gundam model kits. In the community there are some extremely talented and experienced modelers and it mainly their inspiring creations which gave me idea to work on something similar for my FMP.

Now I better clear up some confusion made by the presentation I gave on Friday. Most of the references I used like the image above are works by fellow modelers. The examples of modeling work I had shown are all dioramas based inside a sci-fi hangar environment and it is this kind of environment I wanted to work on for my FMP.  Although the idea of using robot was rejected that doesn’t mean the whole sci-fi aspect is out of the window so hopefully I can find a suitable replacement.
